Bacon Mushroom & Onion Mixture

This is the base mixture of Bacon, Mushrooms and Onions - A simple but tasty combination trio that can be used in a variety of dishes!

Servings: 3 Portions
  • 4 cloves garlic
  • 2 large onions diced
  • 400 g mushrooms sliced
  • 200 g bacon sliced across the length into 1 inch pieces
  • salt & pepper to taste
  • 1 tbsp cooking oil
  1. Add cooking oil to a cold pan, and place bacon pieces in pan
  2. Place pan on stove and turn up heat to medium-low. As the bacon heats up, it will start to sizzle and the fat will start to render.
  3. Once bacon starts sizzling, add in onions and mushrooms. Turn the heat up to medium-high and continue cooking, stirring occasionally to ensure even cooking. 10-15 mins.
  4. By now, the onions should be soft and translucent, the bacon browning nicely, and the mushrooms giving up their water and starting to brown. Add the garlic and continue to saute ingredients.
  5. At this stage, most of the fat should be rendered from the bacon, the onions and garlic soft and the mushrooms nicely browned. Taste the mixture, and season with salt and black pepper to taste.
  6. Transfer to a storage container and allow to cool sufficiently before storage. Or you may use immediately in recipes as required.
